GOLDEN PHEASANT CREST
Golden Pheasant Crest Feathers are used for tails and toppings on most Classic Atlantic Salmon Fly patterns and some steelhead patterns. Golden Pheasant Crest Feathers are from the male bird.

Crest feathers with red tips are generally the
most desirable when tying classic salmon flies.

This is a nice crest, but notice the tips are
solid gold and is less desirable than crests
with reddish tips. Even without the red tips,
they will still look great and most people
will never know the difference

The average golden pheasant crests are about 4" but can be found in longer lengths. It is important to buy the good quality crests when tying the classic style or artistic flies. There is a grading system starting with #1, which are the best quality, then #2 which is good quality and the grade most often seen in the average fly tying shop. The lowest grade would be #3. Usually the grade is not listed on the package except with the best quality crest feathers and often be labeled as "X-Select". The best quality golden pheasant heads can be hard to find.

When you buy golden pheasant crests they will
still be attached to the head. There will be about
a dozen longer feathers that work best for toppings
and another dozen shorter length feathers that are
good  for tails.

Most fly tying shops will have golden pheasant crests in stock or they should be easy to order. When you buy golden pheasant crest feathers they will still be attached to the head. You should be able to get about two dozen usable crest feathers, depending on the quality. Most commercial golden pheasant crests are average quality, but will provide suitable feathers for most applications.

Golden Pheasant Crest Dyed Highlander Green

Golden pheasant crests are sold and most often used for their natural color, but can be dyed a variety of colors with great success. Available in red, orange and highlander green, ect...

When buying golden pheasant crests it is always nice to have a couple heads to look through. Some heads will be visually better than others. We have bought Golden Pheasant Crest feathers that had a twist in the stem. It can be impossible to tie them on straight and while there are methods to get rid of the twist, it is best to avoid buying crests with twisted stems.

The longest, straightest golden pheasant crest feathers will be found running down the middle of the head. In almost all cases the golden pheasant crest feather is tied on the fly along the same line as the hook shank and need to be straight as possible.

The splayed barbs create a flowing effect ...

The barbs of a golden pheasant crest feather can be splayed with the use of steam. There are several other methods you might have heard about, including soaking the feathers in water and letting dry on glass.

Golden Pheasant Skin with Head

Tail feathers are almost always sold separately

When buying complete bird skins, the skin should be pliable and scrapped clean of any residue.

Commercially available bird skins and feathers bought in a fly tying shop will be clean and have uniform color when dyed. If acquiring bird skins and feathers from other sources then precautions should to be taken to avoid insects or other pests that could infest your fly tying supplies.
