GOLDEN PHEASANT TIPPETS
Golden Pheasant Tippets can be used for tails, wings, ect... Some patterns use complete tippets and other patterns might use only a couple barbs. The neck tippets are orange with black bars. They are readily available and most fly tying shops should have them in stock.

These orange tippet feathers are from the neck of a male golden pheasant and are often used when tying Classic Atlantic Salmon Flies. They are also used for tails on the Royal Coachman or with patterns such as the General Practitioner to name a few.

Golden pheasant feathers can be dyed with some good results. If your local fly shop doesn't have dyed Golden Pheasant skins, they should be able to order them from any of the major suppliers.

Golden Pheasant Green Tippets
Green Tippets from the lower neck
or back of a male Golden Pheasant.

The green tippets on the back of a Golden Pheasant are very unique. They are sold in packs or most often can be acquired when buying a complete skin. When sold in packages they will sometimes have different names such as "Neck Feathers" or "Nap Feathers", but are still considered tippets by some sources. Have also heard them referred to as "Blooming Plumage"

There is a grading for golden pheasant tippet feathers starting with #1, which are the best quality, then #2 which would be good quality and the grade most often seen in the average fly tying shop. The lowest grade would be #3. Usually the grade won't be listed on the package and you will have to make a visual examination to determine the quality. The best quality feathers will sometimes be labeled as "X-Select"

When buying complete bird skins, the skin should be pliable and scrapped clean of any residue.

Commercially available bird skins and feathers bought in a fly tying shop will be clean and have uniform color when dyed. If acquiring bird skins and feathers from other sources then precautions should to be taken to avoid insects or other pests that could infest your fly tying supplies.
