BUFFALO HAIR
Buffalo hair is not used often when tying flies and you might have to search around. While you could dye buffalo hair, it is most often sold in the natural color. Usually sold in patches a couple inches square for reasonable prices.

As you can see in the above images, that the hair is tangled in a confused mass. Trying to line up tips with a hair stacker would be kind of useless.

When buying any hair or fur that is on the hide, the hide should be soft and pliable. The hide should be scrapped clean of any residue.

Commercially available buffalo hair bought in a fly tying shop should be clean and free from insects. If acquiring buffalo hair from a hunter then precautions need to be taken to avoid insects or other critters that could infest your other fly tying supplies.

A friend in Bisbee, AZ used to raise buffalo. One day they broke through the fence and escaped. He rented a helicopter and did an extensive search without any luck. They are probably still roaming around out there today.
