ELK HAIR
Elk hair is readily available and sold at most fly tying shops
in patches a couple inches square at reasonable prices. Elk hair can be dyed but is most often sold in natural colors.

Elk hair is similar to deer hair, but is longer and stronger. The fibers of elk hair are less coarse than deer and does not flair as well when spinning it on a fish hook.

Elk hair is hollow and has good floatability.

When buying any hair or fur that is on the hide, the hide should be soft and pliable. The hide should be scrapped clean of any residue.

Commercially available elk hair bought in a fly tying shop should be clean and free from insects. If acquiring elk hair from a hunter then precautions need to be taken to avoid insects or other critters that could infest your other fly tying supplies. Also elk in the wild could have ticks.
