RACCOON TAIL
Raccoon tail hair can be used for wings or tails on steelhead and wet flies. Complete tails average 12 or more inches in length withbands of light and dark colors. The length of the guard hair is xx inches. The guard hairs are soft and supple throughout the tail.

Most fly tying shops don't keep raccoon tails in stock and you might have to order them.

Raccoon tails have a thick layer of under-fur that can be used for dubbing purposes.

FLY TYING HAIR STACKER
When working with raccoon tail hairs you can use a fly tying hair stacker to line up the tips.

When buying any hair or fur that is on the hide, the hide should be soft and pliable. The hide should be scrapped clean of any residue.

Commercially available raccoon hair bought in a fly tying shop should be clean and free from insects. If acquiring raccoon hair from a hunter then precautions need to be taken to avoid insects or other critters that could infest your other fly tying supplies.
