PREVENTING THE TIPS OF SUPER GLUE FROM GETTING CLOGGED
When using Super Glue or Zap-A-Gap, a common problem is keeping the tip of the nozzle from getting clogged. There are a few simple steps to help prevent the nozzle tips from getting clogged.

Super Glue
1 Ounce Bottle of Super Glue

  • When opening a new bottle of glue it is important to make a clean cut on the nozzle using a razor or sharp knife. Ragged edges will capture excess glue.
  • After using the glue, tap the bottle down hard. Squeeze the bottle to blow air through the nozzle Clean the nozzle and squeeze the bottle again and you should hear air blowing through the tip.
  • Do a visual inspection...
  • If a build-up of glue does occur, try scrapping off the cured glue with your finger nails. If using a razor or knife to scrap off the cured glue, they can cut into the plastic nozzle and any ragged edges will capture even more glue next time the bottle is used, which will compound the problem.
  • If the tip does get clogged with dried glue, you can heat a needle in a candle's flame and poke into the opening. The heated needle melts away the dried glue like a hot knife through butter. We do need to included a disclaimer with this method due to any possible fire hazzard, but it has worked like a charm from our personal experience.

OPTIONS:
When using bottles of super glue or Zap-A-Gap one method we use is to take a needle and poke a hole in the side of the plastic bottle. The hole should be above the level of the glue and the needle should be thin as possible, but stiff enough that it won't bend when poking the hole through the plastic bottle. Now tilt and lightly squeeze the bottle. There should be a small drop of glue on the outside surface of the bottle that can be captured onto the tip of the needle. Similar to using a bodkin to apply varnish, use the needle to precisely apply the drop of glue onto the fly. The hole in the bottle will be sealed closed from glue still on the surface. This method of poking holes in the side of the bottles or tubes of glue when fly tying and it has proved to be effective without the mess and you never have to worry about clogged nozzles, because we can always poke a new hole in a different location on the bottle.
